I spent twenty years in negotiation rooms. Reading someone’s eyes, measuring the length of a silence, and finding meaning in it — that was the only method I had.
Sitting side by side, and still not having met. You’ve watched that distance form from closer than anyone.
Thank you for sharing. Negotiating is the skill and art. I wish you could teach our current political leaders to negotiate.
I continually point out that I am from California and not an agreement with our president or his policies.
My family was stationed in Japan in 1983 to 84. My son is fluent in Japanese, retaining some from his childhood and continuing as he studied at our university. I have a deep appreciation for those in other countries and pray I will learn more from our communications.

Come padre, ho sempre cercato di dire le cose giuste. Ma i miei figli non ricordano quello che ho detto — ricordano quello che facevo. Mi ci è voluto molto tempo per capirlo.

Japan in 1983. I still remember a little of what that looked like. What struck me is that your son has kept that time in the form of a language.
What enters through the ear in childhood doesn’t leave.
